Nikki Landry is ten years old, and lives in the bayous of Louisiana in a houseboat with her papa and mama and younger brother, Jesse.

The family moves quite often due to Papa's occupation of being a crab fisherman.

Nikki doesn't like to wear dresses, but prefers overalls and boots. She loves helping Papa fish. She is adventurous, and tends to get in trouble quite a bit for being very independent.

She sees herself as a "legend buster" because Papa says "Behind every legend there is the truth."

Rita Monette was born and raised in South Louisiana. She loves to write and illustrate stories set in the beautiful, yet mysterious, bayous and swamps of her home state.

Her middle grade series, The Nikki Landry Swamp Legends, is based on tales told by her father, who made his living in those bayous.

She currently lives with her husband, four lap dogs, and one lap cat, in the mountains of Tennessee. Besides writing and painting, she loves watching the many birds that make their habitat on the Cumberland Plateau, working in the garden, and frequenting waterfalls.
